Baseball is a game of numbers and the probability of a pitcher pitching a complete game is .000092. Baseball is a sport that is rich in history and team and individual achievements. Baseball is also tainted by steroid use and performance enhancing drugs. Mark Buehrle beat the odds in pitching a perfect game, set a record for retiring 45 consecutive batters and has steered clear of cheating. He deserves recognition for his accomplishments and for the baseball player he is. Let’s take a look at what has happened since his perfect game.

Vote for Manny Pacquiao – ESPY’s Best Play and Best Fighter Awards!

http://promo.espn.go.com/espn/specialsection/espys2009/#/vote/

Manny Pacquiao is on the verge of superstardom in the sports world. I remember first watching him as an undercard earlier in the decade. I never thought he would moved up in several wait classes and dominate in each one.

Pacquiao is nominated for two ESPY’s – Best Play and Best Fighter. Here is a summary from the ESPN Media Zone:

BEST PLAY

Ovechkin vs… Rangers

  • Washington Capitals’ Alexander Ovechkin scored a spectacular goal vs… Rangers in game five of Eastern Conference Quarterfinals.

Pacquiao KO’s Hatton

  • Manny Pacquiao cemented his claim as the best pound-for-pound boxer.
  • Pacquiao knocked Hatton down two times in the first round before knocking him out with a vicious left hand late in the second round.

Roethlisberger to Holmes Super Bowl Winning TD

  • Holmes’ brilliant catch in the corner of the end zone with 35 seconds gave the Steelers a 27-23 victory and a record, sixth Super Bowl title.

Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree makes game-winning catch vs.. Texas

  • The 28-yard touchdown pass with :01 remaining sealed the upset victory for Texas Tech as they rallied late to beat Texas, 39-33.

BEST FIGHTER

Lyoto Machida, MMA

  • Knocked out Rashad Evans to capture light-heavyweight championship at UFC 98.
  • The match-up of Machida and Evans was a battle of unbeatens.

Shane Mosley, Boxing

  • Won WBA welterweight title by beating Antonio Margarito.
  • Scored a ninth-round TKO to earn another championship (he has won in three separate weight classes).

Manny Pacquiao, Boxing

  • Dominated over eight rounds against Oscar De La Hoya before the fight was stopped in a welterweight bout.
  • Followed the De La Hoya fight with two-round demolition of Ricky Hatton.
  • Joined Oscar De La Hoya as the second boxer all-time to win titles in six different weight divisions.

Anderson Silva, MMA

  • Defeated Patrick Cote and Thales Leites in middleweight title defenses.
  • Also defeated James Irwin.

Pacquiao does go up against some stiff competition but is deserving of both awards. While many star athletes chose not to take a stand in cultural or political issues, Pacquiao does not shy away. Not only has he had one of the most dominating years in sports, he has had a significant cultural and political impact in the Philippines.

Although Pacquiao didn’t win an election for public office in the Philippines (maybe because Filipinos wanted him to concentrate on boxing), he does have a shot at winning a couple of ESPY’s.

Hey #FollowFriday meet #SingleOutSaturday

#SingleOutSaturday: Pick 1 Tweep & Tell Us All About Them | Social Media Unraveled

Twitter is an amazing tool that connects all forms of social media. It encourages dialogue between like-minded individuals to share information and network. One way to expand your network is to participate in FollowFriday, a weekly occurrence where tweeps recommend other tweeps to follow.

Philip Nowak, from Social Media Unraveled, has taken #FollowFriday another step forward and created #SingleOutSaturday. While #FollowFriday allows you to simply list tweeps you recommend, #SingleOutSaturday encourages you to recommend a person and write a quick tweet about why you should follow them.

Pretty cool idea, right? Someone will actually learn about your recommendation from a #SingleOutSaturday tweet. Here’s how it works:

Phil was kind enough to single me out, mentions that I blog about sports marketing and social media, includes a link, and points out that I am a Bears fan and recently got engaged.

Try it out! Who are you going to single out on #SingleOutSaturday?

KFC's 'Ultimate Fan' on MySpace

KFC, MySpace Partner In ‘Ultimate Fan’ Contest

KFC announced that they are partnering with MySpace to launch an ‘Ultimate Fan’ contest. The winner will receive a year’s worth of chicken and featured in future advertising. I can’t knock KFC for trying to create innovating ways to connect with consumers as we saw earlier this year they proposed to fix potholes in major urban areas.

KFC's pothole fix

Although this is going to create buzz, will this translate into sales for KFC? It might… but I just don’t see this creating that much excitement. I could be wrong and I hope I’m wrong because I like to see brands take an innovate plunges into social media rather than a cookie cut traditional media campaign. Another question I have is, why did they choose MySpace? Isn’t MySpace so 5 years ago? KFC already has a presence in Facebook and Twitter and MySpace continues to take a dip in traffic and more users are abandoning their accounts.  Regardless, it will be a good  case study as more brands continue to play in the social media game.
